PolizónThe Sebastian Burgos School is a center with particular educational conditions focused on sever mental, sensorial or motor handicap. On the valencian outskirt, 10 Km ago from the downtown, this center is located close to the Saller beach. The courtyard wall has been initially built 60 meters away from the seashore. But the latest additions brought to the marina sport harbor of Valencia altered the natural course of the drift flow and filed solids on the seabed. It has created an artificial barrier to the littoral transport. Tides have been devouring the beach years after years, reducing substantially the distance which separates the sea from the school. The Mediterranean sea is finally facing the walls of the school. Salt and sand corrode and rust everything. On stormy days, the sea goes into the school, flooding classrooms, cutting electricity and oxidizing everything in its path. Because of the environmental consequences of urban works of the marina, the public administration – the same one which placed this center far away from the downtown – is now forced to move the students to a center in the urban core of the city. An integrated place where they should have been placed since the beginning. What place we occupy and what place we leave to the others ? The walls of the school represented, corresponded to the ones which are still in place in our collective subconscious. Each of us has already experienced such a feeling of intrusion, where one is not invited and feels such a trespasser in the mainstream.
